When the “exercise gap” opened during the harsher lockdown period, I was delighted to see our neighbourhood crawling with humans of varying shapes and sizes pedalling an equally diverse variety of two-wheelers. Cycling fills me with joy and a range of other emotions, often conflicting – especially when mountain biking. Few things make me feel more alive than exploring the world on a two-wheeled machine powered by my legs – the burn in my lungs when climbing steep off-road trails, followed by an exhilarating release as I steer my way down the decline on the other side; a feeling I seldom experience in other aspects of my life – pure bumpy, concentrated joy. A contrasting combination of elation, fear, and focus. As I reflec...

Dogpacking 2.0: A Guide to Bikepacking with Your Dog

Several years have passed since I wrote my first Dogpacking article for this site. In that time, the bikepacking community has continued to grow, and naturally, the idea of bringing a dog along has also gained in popularity. All the things that we, as humans, love about bikepacking, just so happen to be most dogs’ favourite things too. Upon reflection of our first, longer international dogpacking adventure, I am admittedly surprised that it worked out as well as it did. On this first big trip in the fall of 2015, we left Canada on a flight bound for Madrid, Spain. I had a fair amount of international travel experience, but I’d never ventured outside of North America with my then dog, Melan. In fact, I really hadn’t attempted any significant bike trips with a dog . With plenty of time spent scouring the web, we were able to learn enough, both prior to departure and in the first weeks of the trip, to piece together an incredible six-month ramble through Spain. The information and in...

How to Carry your Dog Safely on Your Bike in a Pet Bike Basket

How to Introduce Your Dog to a Pet Bike Basket The key is to be slow and gentle, so that your dog does not develop any fear responses. Once learned, those kinds of responses are almost impossible to cure. Below is our video of our dog Billy’s first time in a pet basket on a bike. We got him an Axiom Premium dog bike basket, which doubles as a pet carrier. It still makes me chuckle every time I watch this video. Billy is not the bravest dog on earth – but then, he only weighed about three pounds when this video was taken! As you can see, we took it very slowly, starting off by gently putting him in the Pet Bike Basket, and then slowly pushing the bike, while talking to him reassuringly. At first, Billy was very comfortable in his Axiom Basket. I believe this was because he was so little, he felt really safe in the basket. You can see that in the photo below, where Billy is snugly down in the bottom of the basket, on his blanket. How to Carry your Dog Safely on Your Bike in a Pet Baske...
